after ten thousand years of not posting, i decided to break the silence with something as trivial
as this... i just felt i had to write it.

overheard, during the mrt morning rush - a girl in a majorly pissed colegiala voice: "anu ba?! ba't nang-iipit kayo! gaaaahd!! don't you have minds?!!!"

i can sympathize a bit because i knew what it felt like to be pushed by a sea of people who are desperately trying to come in at all costs, even if it meant rearranging the molecules of the people already inside the cab blocking their way, but i doubt if i'd go to such lengths. so i just stood there and tried to contain my smirk.

ghibli, earthsea, and his dark materials

just learned that studio ghibli has animated the Earthsea Series by Ursula Le Guin, and will probably be showing it in Japan by July. Hayao Miyazaki's son, Goro, was at the helm this time. Some people are miffed though because of the color blindness in the preview posters showing a white Ged (Le Guin has written him with reddish brown skin). Seems that Le Guin herself was outraged about this issue before when she commented on the SciFi Channel mini-series version shown two years ago.
I have high hopes for the movie though but not at all expecting it to be faithful to the story, much less to the ethnicity of the main characters. case in point: Howl's Moving Castle. I enjoyed watching it but in my mind I totally treated the anime movie version and the book as two different stories. Otherwise I would have been horribly disappointed with the anime.

it has been a long time since i read the series, (given to me by Zara!^^), so the details are hazy. I only remember that Ged (the wizard-in-training character conceived by LeGuin way before Rowling ever dreamt of Harry) was a head strong character. I also remember that I was a bit disappointed with "Tombs of Atuan" because the focus of the story is not on him anymore, hehe. I probably should watch the adaptation before I reread it again so I won't be too critical.
...and an added bonus! Okada Junichi (of the group V6) will also be lending his voice to one of the characters (Arren). yey!

on other related news, heheh not really related but just also along the lines of books being adapted to the big screen. Pullman's "His Dark Materials" trilogy is also being made into a movie, slated to be shown tentatively on 2007. Chris Weitz (the younger half of the brothers to be blamed for "American Pie" and also the director of "About a Boy") will be directing, well at the moment he is, who knows who it's going to be tomorrow since apparently there have been a lot of changes. We know how it goes, nothing's final until it's final.
I was surprised to learn though that there are already plays based on the books. (If you ask me I think Iorek looks more like an overgrown weasel than a bear here, yikes)
Anyway, I just finished book 2 and gearing up for the next (and final) adventure in "The Amber SpyGlass".
Gah! I wonder how they'd interpret Lyra's Oxford. I love how Pullman was able to make me believe in Lyra's world and yet still be anchored in reality by Will's. If handled by a good production team I think it will make for a visually appealing adventure movie. and hopefully they won't botch the story too much. It would be interesting to see how they'd handle the stark contrast between the different worlds and beings. the philosophical side of it presents some pretty controversial ideas and might not sit well with some people, I'm guessing most of that will end up on the cutting room floor.

watched nobuta wo produce up to ep 4. i'm hooked! this is a pretty interesting dorama.it brings to mind 2 manga stories that i've read before: kareshi to kanojo no jijou and perfect girl evolution. karekano because of shuji's character who's a different person when with family and friends and when he's pretending to be perfect and agreeable with everyone in school so he can be popular. PGE because nobuko/nobuta = sunako! especially that scene in ep3 when they were watching a horror movie.

the dorama itself is a mix of silliness and sentimentality. with tidbits of truth about life that can get you a-pondering for a minute or two.

akira annoyed me at first because he sometimes speaks like he's drunk or sometimes like a pre-school kid and sometimes like a drunk pre-school kid! but all that is outweighed by how much i like his point of view on things. fave moments of him so far are: [click on the thumbnail for a bigger image]
1) the scene where he and nobuta were in the field of wheat

2) what he said about girls to bando's boyfriend

3) the way he barged into the house and immediately found shuji's secret life out (and he was pleased about it)

4) the way he threatened shuji in front of his brother and father (this really cracked me up!) plus the thought behind why he did it is *sigh*-worthy

5) his encounter with the hontou ojisan

fave ep so far: ep 4

fave shuji moments:
1) when he panicked about the willow and even bothered the fish for help ("sakana chan, oshiete kudasai!", nihihi)

2) inside the haunted house with his brother

3) when he and nobuko were following the willow (they on the bike and it on the boat)

4) whenever he's on the rooftop

5) drinking gyunyu with akira

it sort of appears like i balanced the fave moments so they'd have 5 apiece and yes actually i did. ^_^ but if i were to choose from the two main characters, i'd go with the simple but complicated akira (his being barely coherent not withstanding) just because i really like his perspective and the way truth comes easily to him whereas shuji is struggling in that aspect.

antique bakery

i've fallen in love with the series called "antique bakery", a japanese dorama based on the manga with the same name. at first it doesn't seem interesting. it was a pain to watch really, what with the patchy/rough subs that i got with the copy and it's peppered with certain quiet moments that i know somehow are supposed to mean something but i didn't manage to quite get. well anyway it was a good thing that my friend emilie also lent me the first volume of the manga, more details were revealed and i understood the story better and got to appreciate the dorama finally. i tried to listen more and finally understood the dialogues on my own and read less of the subs too, so that helped. there are four main characters but what's fun is the story does not revolve only on them nor just the baking of cakes either. it's different from all the cooking or sports based series i've seen before. yes, i did get to learn a lot about cakes but that wasn't the main focus either, nor were the love lives of the four main guys. it's more of their interactions with their customers and the people around them and how they react to situations. every so often a new character is introduced, either somebody from their past or one of their regular customers who has an interesting story that accounts for their quirky behavior.

if i ever get to japan, i want to go to that park with a lot of steps (the place where eiji ate a cake with that jilted woman and where kage ate cake with his daughter hideko), i wonder where exactly it is.
fave ep: where a kid in the hospital, for some reason, kept requesting a star cake from her mom but keeps on rejecting the cakes that were brought in. i loved eiji here... and this ep got me crying buckets ^^;
